Are you tired of generic laptop bags that don't quite fit your device? Looking for a sewing project that's both practical and customizable? In this DIY tutorial, I'll walk you through creating a perfectly sized padded laptop bag tailored specifically to your device's dimensions. This project combines functionality with personal style while providing essential protection for your valuable tech.
Why Make Your Own Laptop Bag?
Store-bought laptop bags often come in standard sizes that might be too loose or too tight for your specific device. By creating a custom-fit padded laptop bag, you'll ensure your computer stays snug and protected against bumps and scratches. Plus, you get to choose fabrics that match your personal style!
Materials You'll Need
Before diving into this sewing project, gather these essential materials:
- Fabric: Approximately 3/4 yard of exterior fabric (get creative with patterns!)
- Lining: Approximately 3/4 yard of interior/lining fabric
- Padding: Approximately 3/4 yard of fusible fleece
- Zipper: 22-24 inches long (22" for smaller laptops, 24" for larger devices)
Tools Required
Make sure you have these basic sewing tools on hand:
- Sewing machine
- Coordinating thread
- Scissors or rotary cutter with mat
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Pins or fabric clips
- Iron and ironing board
- Fabric marker or pencil
- Zipper foot for your sewing machine
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Measure Your Laptop
The foundation of this custom laptop bag is getting accurate measurements of your device.
- Lay your laptop flat
- Measure around the width
- Measure around the length
- Divide each measurement in half
For example, if your measurements are 26 inches around the width and 18.5 inches around the length, your halved measurements would be 13 inches by 9.25 inches.
Step 2: Calculate Final Dimensions
To ensure your laptop fits comfortably with room for seam allowances and the zipper:
- Add 1.5 inches to both halved measurements
- For our example: 13" + 1.5" = 14.5" width
- And 9.25" + 1.5" = 10.75" length
Pro Tip: This creates a snug fit. If you prefer more room, add 2-2.5 inches instead. Don't go much larger, or your laptop might slide around too much.
Step 3: Cut Your Fabric
Now that you have your final measurements, it's time to cut your materials:
Main Bag Pieces:
- Two pieces of exterior fabric using your final measurements
- Two pieces of interior/lining fabric using the same measurements
- Two pieces of fusible fleece using the same measurements
Optional Pocket:
- One piece each of exterior fabric, lining fabric, and fusible fleece
- Width: 3 inches less than your main pieces
- Length: Same as your main pieces
Bias Tape for Pocket:
- One strip of exterior fabric
- Width: Same as your main case width
- Length: 2.5 inches
Step 4: Create Fabric Sandwiches
For each component of your bag, you'll create "fabric sandwiches":
-
Two main sandwiches (for front and back of bag):
- Exterior fabric on one side
- Fusible fleece in the middle
- Interior fabric on the other side
-
One pocket sandwich (if adding a pocket):
- Same layering as above
Step 5: Quilt Your Fabric Sandwiches
This step adds texture and reinforcement to your laptop bag:
- Choose a quilting pattern (straight lines, diagonal lines, or free-motion)
- Space lines approximately 1 inch apart
- Quilt all three fabric sandwiches
Step 6: Finish Raw Edges
To prevent fraying and create a professional look:
- Use a serger around all edges of your quilted pieces, OR
- Apply a tight zigzag stitch around all edges
Step 7: Prepare and Attach the Pocket (Optional)
If adding a pocket to your laptop bag:
-
Create bias tape by:
- Folding your 2.5-inch strip lengthwise and pressing
- Opening and folding long raw edges toward center crease
- Pressing again
-
Attach bias tape to top edge of pocket:
- Place right side of binding against right side of pocket
- Stitch along crease closest to raw edges
- Fold bias tape over raw edge to back
- Stitch "in the ditch" on front to secure
-
Attach pocket to one main panel:
- Place main panel right side up
- Position pocket on top, aligning bottom and side edges
- Stitch two vertical lines 1 inch apart in center for pen holder
- Sew sides and bottom with 1/4-inch seam allowance
Optional Strap Tabs
Cut 2 pieces of fabric 2" x 2" and add interfacing, Fold in half to create a crease then fold the edges in toward that crease and finger press. Now place the fabric through the 1" D-ring and fold to match the raw edges. Mark 2" in from the side edge and align the strap tab with the top edge of the main panel and base in place with a long stitch length.
Step 8: Install the Zipper
The zipper installation is crucial for a functional laptop bag:
- Find and mark centers of zipper and top edge of main piece with pocket
- Place zipper face down on main piece, aligning raw edges
- Pin zipper along top edge and around corners
- Make small clips in zipper tape at corners (avoiding teeth)
- Switch to zipper foot on sewing machine
- Stitch zipper to fabric along pin line
- Clip excess fabric from corners
- Open zipper and press fabric away from teeth
- Topstitch around zipper opening (1/8 inch from edge)
- Repeat process for second main piece
Step 9: Close the Bag
With the zipper installed, it's time to finish your laptop bag:
- Make sure zipper is open at least halfway
- Turn project inside out
- Pin bottom edges and open side edges together
- Starting 1 inch from zipper end, sew with 1/4-inch seam allowance:
- Down one side
- Across bottom
- Up other side
- Stop 1 inch past other zipper end
- Stitch horizontally across seam allowance at both zipper ends
- Add binding to finished edges (optional)
Step 10: Turn Right Side Out and Test Fit
The moment of truth:
- Turn bag right side out through zipper opening
- Gently push out corners
- Test if your laptop fits properly
Step 11: Add Handles (Optional)
For easier carrying:
- Cut two strips of main fabric (4" × 18")
- Cut batting or fusible fleece for padding
- Create padded tubes for handles
- Find center of bag and mark 2" on each side, 1" from top edge
- Attach handles by sewing:
- 1/4-inch across edge of handle
- Around corners to create 1-inch box
- Repeat for second handle

Tips for Success
- Fabric Selection: Choose durable exterior fabrics like canvas, denim, or upholstery fabric for longevity
- Zipper Length: When in doubt, go slightly longer rather than shorter
- Machine Settings: Use a medium stitch length (2.5-3) for most of this project
- Corners: Take extra time with corners around the zipper for a professional finish
- Pressing: Press seams thoroughly throughout the project for clean results
Customization Ideas
- Exterior Pocket: Add an additional zippered pocket to the exterior
- Padding Thickness: Use double-layer fusible fleece for extra protection
- Decorative Elements: Add appliqué, embroidery, or decorative topstitching
- Crossbody Strap: Create a detachable shoulder strap with swivel clips
- Water Resistance: Use water-resistant fabric or add a coating for protection
